Wednesday (2022)

 Wednesday (2022)
Jenny Ortega stars as Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton's new Netflix series.

Release date: 11/23/22
Runtime: ~45 minutes per episode
Director: Tim Burton
Writer: Alfred Gough (series created by), Miles Millar (series created by), Charles Addams (based on characters created by)
Streaming on: Netflix

I don't think I'm the target audience, and that is okay.

The best casting to me is when I can't imagine anybody else in the role. The only person this is true for so far is Jenny Ortega. Yes, she is a rockstar. 🙂

Incidentally, if you are trying to quit drinking, play a drinking game where you drink every time you see Wednesday blink. (I'm pretty sure Wednesday doesn't blink 🤣)
I'm impressed that every episode has so many Addams Family references in different forms, including the musical, and still can have a cohesive script. (However, I am wondering if knowing the musical is a bit of a spoiler for things to come with a certain character.)

Ortega's fencing double edits are Flashdance bad.

The closed captions are accurate and the descriptors are written with a thoughtful tone.

0.6/1 Directing
0.7/1 Cinematography
0.8/1 Visual design
0.7/1 Editing
0.6/1 Plot
0.8/1 Writing
0.7/1 Acting
0.9/1 Soundtrack/Score/Sound
0.5/1 Originality
0.5/1 Rewatchability
Total: 6.8/10 Binge Bones

The verdict: Wednesday is good for what it is. And what it is is a supernatural teen drama. Emo Nancy Drew. A-goth-a Christie. I like my Burton with a little more whimsy and random merriment to break the gloom, but as I said earlier, I clearly am not the target audience.

Streaming on Hulu So I just watched the original Black Christmas for the first time a couple days ago, so it's pretty fresh in my mind. One thing that made Bob Clark's version better is that the low budget aspect of it actually contributed to the creepiness and horror. This version looks better in a lot of ways, but the polish detracts from the gritty horror that helped the 1974 version succeed better at the goal it se

The ones that we have are great, but they don't come out often enough. #gimmemoregingersnaps This film marks the first appearance of a female as a werewolf in a talkie! WTG, Nina Foch! (You might remember her from An American in Paris.) The setting is in New Orleans, Louisiana but is very recognizable as a Hollywood backlot.  Twice-married-to Lana Turner leading man Stephen Crane is really the only actual terrible thing about this movie.
