Wednesday (2022)

 Wednesday (2022)
Jenny Ortega stars as Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton's new Netflix series.

Release date: 11/23/22
Runtime: ~45 minutes per episode
Director: Tim Burton
Writer: Alfred Gough (series created by), Miles Millar (series created by), Charles Addams (based on characters created by)
Streaming on: Netflix

I don't think I'm the target audience, and that is okay.

The best casting to me is when I can't imagine anybody else in the role. The only person this is true for so far is Jenny Ortega. Yes, she is a rockstar. 🙂

Incidentally, if you are trying to quit drinking, play a drinking game where you drink every time you see Wednesday blink. (I'm pretty sure Wednesday doesn't blink 🤣)
I'm impressed that every episode has so many Addams Family references in different forms, including the musical, and still can have a cohesive script. (However, I am wondering if knowing the musical is a bit of a spoiler for things to come with a certain character.)

Ortega's fencing double edits are Flashdance bad.

The closed captions are accurate and the descriptors are written with a thoughtful tone.

The verdict: Wednesday is good for what it is. And what it is is a supernatural teen drama. Emo Nancy Drew. A-goth-a Christie. I like my Burton with a little more whimsy and random merriment to break the gloom, but as I said earlier, I clearly am not the target audience.

The Recruit (2022-)

The Recruit (2022-) AIRS Friday s at  3:00 AM  on  Netflix PREMIERED December 16, 2022 RUNTIME 55 m TOTAL RUNTIME 7 h  20 m   (8 episodes) CREATOR Alexi Hawley COUNTRY United States LANGUAGE English STUDIOS Hypnotic ,  Entertainment One ,  P3 Media GENRES Drama ,  Crime A fledgling lawyer at the CIA that becomes enmeshed in dangerous international power politics when a former asset threatens to expose the nature of her long-term relationship with the agency unless they exonerate her of a serious crime. Streaming on Netflix I have only watched the first episode so far, so I obviously can't speak for the whole season. The truth is I want this to be Mindhunter. :( Oh well. I appreciate the sarcasm in the writing, but I'm not sure what this show is trying to do. Is this a Jack Ryan thing? I like cheese. Mmm... cheese. I'm totally getting some cheese after I post this. 0.2/1 Directing  0.5/1 Cinematography 0.6/1 Visual design 0.1/1 Editing 0...

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) RELEASED October 31, 1962 RUNTIME 135 mins DIRECTOR Robert Aldrich  WRITERS Lukas Heller (screenplay), Robert Altman (dialogue), Henry Farrell (novel)  STARS Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Victor Buono COUNTRY United States LANGUAGE English  STUDIO Associates & Aldrich Company, The  GENRES Drama, Thriller, Horror Streaming on: Hoolpa, Criterion The plot: Two aging actresses live as recluses in an old Hollywood mansion. Basically what starts as Gypsy ends as Grey Gardens. Random observations: I want their mansion. I've heard people complain about the score being too melodramatic, but I found it unimposing. Apparently, Joan Crawford insisted on having Blanche's hair and nails perfect as well as her costumes pressed. Bette Davis argued that someone who had been a recluse for 20 years wouldn't have any of these traits and that Crawford had "made a mistake".  It's been a pretty minute since I had watched this film, but I ...

The Mad Monster (1942)

The Mad Monster (1942) RELEASED May 15, 1942 RUNTIME 77 mins  DIRECTOR Sam Newfield  WRITER Fred Myton (screenplay)  STARS Johnny Downs, George Zucco, Anne Nagel  COUNTRY United States LANGUAGE English  STUDIO Sigmund Neufeld Productions GENRES Horror Streaming on: Amazon Prime, Epix, FlixFling, TubiTV, Sling TV, DIRECTV The plot: A simple-minded handyman (who can only be described as "the obvious inspiration for Torgo") gets turned into a revenge exacting werewolf by a mad scientist. Random observations: After watching 1921's Destiny directed by Fritz Lang this morning, it's quite noticeable that the film quality of this movie has degraded greatly since the '40s and could do with a facelift. However, part of the charm of the early 40's b-movies of this budget lies in the imperfections themselves.  If you watch this film on Amazon, please note that there are no closed captions available. The soundscape of this film is akin to an arctic wolf sanc...
