The plot: Melrose Place's Antonio Sabato Jr. takes an experimental sub to fight an oops-actually-not-extinct Megalodon that killed his parents.

Random observations:

  • Director Matt Codd actually has some pretty strong Art Department credits, and I think that's probably where he is best suited. All of the actors seem to be performing in a different movie.
  • Putting glasses on an actor does not make their character suddenly seem smarter.
  • "I have a feeling we've bitten off more than we can chew." Yes, yes you have.

There's a lot more arguing about Megaladons than actual Megaladon, and it's slow, patient arguing at that. Normally people are urgently yelling at each other in movies like this, which can get annoying but nobody really has any sense of urgency here. "Interesting theory..." *discusses inaccurate paleontological fodder for 35 minutes*

There's also not anybody to root for. The characters aren't interesting enough to wish for the Megaladon to chomp their heads off or to wish for their safety. But if you like watching people draw circles on maps, this is the movie for you!

Verdict: If you can keep your eyelids pried for the first 80 minutes, the last 10 minutes are pretty much the only redeeming factor.

Streaming on Hulu So I just watched the original Black Christmas for the first time a couple days ago, so it's pretty fresh in my mind. One thing that made Bob Clark's version better is that the low budget aspect of it actually contributed to the creepiness and horror. This version looks better in a lot of ways, but the polish detracts from the gritty horror that helped the 1974 version succeed better at the goal it se
